News and musings related to the CG world and my dealings with it.

A busy week

I have three items of news to report today:

Firstly, my April Fool's Day prank. As I explained on my Protein page, there was an unused design for the alien spaceship which I'd always really liked, and I'd thought it a real pity that it never got seen by an audience. For my April Fool's joke this year I filmed some shots of the Croydon skyline using my Samsung mobile phone, motion tracked it (with some difficulty - SynthEyes doesn't like phone footage!) and then composited in an animated shot of the spacecraft, appearing to hang menacingly in the sky. I composited the clip using Nuke - my first use of it in quite a while for my home projects - and yesterday morning the completed twenty second piece appeared without warning on all my social media pages. While I don't think anybody seriously believed it - or at least there were no reports of any Orson Welles-style alien invasion panics - it was a good bit of fun and hopefully generated a bit more interest in my business.

My second bit of news also relates (rather more directly) to Protein, as it's going to receive another public screening this week. On Thursday evening it will be on the big screen at the Candid Arts Trust in Torrens Street, Islington, as part of Kino London's fortnightly open-mic film night. As the rules of the night prohibit films over ten minutes in length, I have created a specially shortened 'Kino Cut'. However I'm still quite happy that it works in this form.

Finally, another film that I worked on has now made its way onto Amazon Prime, where subscribers can watch it for free: Comic Book Kingdom is an hour-long documentary by Marius Smuts and I provided the animated introduction sequence.
